UPLAND LADIES
Eagle — December 9, 2011
It was a cool, crisp but sunny December morning when friends, Lois DelCurto from Summerville, Oregon and June Gempler from Meridian, Idaho paired up to cash in on the Upland Bird Hunt for two ladies purchased at the 2010 Boise NWTF banquet. The hunt was sponsored by landowner Jeff Smith of Seven Summits Game Ranch in the north Eagle foothills and hosted by Idaho NWTF members, Charley and Mary Henry. Jeff is an avid hunter and conservationist and has invested a lot of time and energy into making his 1200 acres ranch a paradise for upland game birds. Our supportive husbands joined the hike and were there to cheer us on.
We brought our own Lab along and had a friend of our hosts that also brought his bird dog; we were covered for pointing and retrieving our birds. The morning produced a good amount of birds and a few hits, seemed to take us ladies a few shots to get into the swing of things. (Trap shooting is a bit different than bird hunting; you just never know where those birds are going to get up). We pulled together for a great lunch (Charley’s famous elk chili and wine) sponsored by our hosts in a yurt that is perched on the top of the Eagle foothills; where you could see the entire Treasure Valley and beyond, it was beautiful.
Since we had such a successful and gorgeous morning, Jeff invited us for a few more hours of hiking the foothills and hunting for pheasant, quail and chukars with a few more birds bagged by the ladies.
We’d like to thank the landowner and NWTF for a great day in the Idaho outdoors, this day certainly was one of the best that Lois and I have shared in 2010 and a great bonding day with our husbands and dog. We look forward to supporting the NWTF for years to come.
